Formula

The Wilks score is calculated using a 5th-degree polynomial: Wilks Score = Total Lifted (kg) × [500 / (a + bx + cx² + dx³ + ex⁴ + fx⁵)] Where x is body weight in kg, and a, b, c, d, e, f are gender-specific constants.

Example for a 90 kg male who lifts a total of 600 kg: - Applying male polynomial coefficients yields a Wilks coefficient of 0.6402. - Wilks Score = 600 × 0.6402 = 384.12 points.

Results Explained

Your result includes your Wilks Coefficient (the multiplier applied to your lifted weight) and your Wilks Score (measured in points). In powerlifting competitions, the lifter with the highest Wilks score is awarded the title of "Best Lifter," representing the highest relative strength of the meet regardless of weight class.

The Concept of Relative Strength

In powerlifting, absolute strength refers to the total amount of weight a lifter can move, regardless of body weight. While impressive, absolute strength naturally favors heavier individuals. A person who weighs 120 kg (264 lbs) will almost always be able to lift more absolute weight than a person who weighs 60 kg (132 lbs) because they possess a larger frame, heavier bones, and significantly more muscle tissue.

However, physics dictates that as an organism grows larger, its mass increases at a much faster rate than its muscle cross-sectional area (the square-cube law). Therefore, lighter lifters are actually much stronger *pound-for-pound* (relative strength). The Wilks formula was developed to create a scientific handicap system, similar to golf, that mathematically adjusts for this physical scaling law, letting a lightweight female lifter compete fairly against a heavyweight male lifter.

The Mathematics of the Wilks Coefficient

The formula uses a 5th-degree polynomial in the denominator to fit a curve based on historical powerlifting world records. The coefficients are highly precise and differ by gender to account for biological differences in body fat and muscle distribution limits:

How to Interpret Your Wilks Score

Although relative strength depends on age and training experience, the powerlifting community generally classifies Wilks scores (for raw lifters) as follows:

  • Under 250: Beginner. Typical for lifters in their first year of structured training.
  • 250 - 300: Novice / Intermediate. Displays a solid foundation of strength, representing respectable gym standards.
  • 300 - 350: Advanced. Competitive at local powerlifting meets. Represents a highly developed level of strength.
  • 350 - 400: Exceptional. National-level competitor. Achieving this requires years of dedicated training and excellent genetics.
  • 400 - 450: Elite. International-level competitor. Capable of winning major regional or national titles.
  • 450+: World Class. Reserved for elite, world-record holding athletes.

Wilks vs. Other Powerlifting Formulas

While Wilks has been the default standard for decades, other formulas exist:

  • IPF GL Points: Introduced by the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) in 2020. It was designed to resolve a known bias in the Wilks formula, which slightly favored middleweight lifters and penalized superheavyweights. The GL formula works similarly but scales points linearly based on expected performance distributions.
  • DOTS Formula: Created to replace Wilks, DOTS is widely praised for being the most balanced formula across extreme weight limits (such as ultra-lightweight men/women and heavy lifters). It has gained massive popularity in non-IPF federations.
  • Sinclair Coefficient: The equivalent formula used in Olympic Weightlifting to compare performance in the Snatch and Clean & Jerk.

How to Increase Your Wilks Score

Since your Wilks score is a ratio of your total lift to a polynomial curve of your body weight, there are three primary ways to increase your score:

  1. Increase Absolute Strength (Ideal): Increase the weight of your Squat, Bench, and Deadlift while keeping your body weight completely stable. This is the most common path for intermediate lifters.
  2. Improve Body Composition (Cut Fat): Lose body fat while maintaining your muscle mass and strength. Because fat tissue does not contribute to moving weight, dropping fat will lower your body weight (shifting you to a more favorable coefficient) while keeping your total lift high.
  3. Slowly Bulk (Gain Quality Muscle): Gaining weight is acceptable if the added muscle mass increases your lifting total at a rate that outpaces the coefficient penalty. For example, if gaining 5 kg of body weight allows you to add 40 kg to your total lift, your Wilks score will increase.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good Wilks score?

For a raw gym lifter, a Wilks score of 300 is considered very good and indicates a strong pound-for-pound level of strength. Competitive local lifters usually aim for 350+, while national-level lifters exceed 400+.

Why did the IPF stop using the Wilks formula?

The IPF replaced Wilks with the IPF GL formula in 2020. The Wilks formula was criticized for statistically favoring middleweight lifters (74kg to 93kg classes) and making it very difficult for superheavyweight lifters to win overall awards.

How does body weight affect my Wilks score?

As your body weight increases, your Wilks coefficient decreases. To maintain or increase your Wilks score, you must lift proportionally more weight as you get heavier.

Is the Wilks formula same for men and women?

No. The formulas use entirely different polynomial coefficients for men and women. This accounts for differences in natural hormone levels, body fat distribution, and lean muscle mass capacity between genders.

Can I calculate Wilks score in pounds (lbs)?
